Equipment

  • large mason jar, pitcher, French press, or cold brew coffee maker
  • mixing spoon
  • fine mesh sieve
  • coffee filter, cheesecloth, or nut milk bag
  • clean jar or bottle
  • serving glass

Ingredients

  • 1 cup coarsely ground coffee
  • 4 cups cold filtered water
  • ice, for serving
  • cold water, milk, oat milk, or cream, to dilute
  • vanilla syrup, caramel, maple syrup, or simple syrup, optional

Instructions

  • Add the coarsely ground coffee to a large mason jar, pitcher, French press, or cold brew coffee maker.
  • Pour in the cold filtered water.
  • Stir gently until all the coffee grounds are fully wet.
  • Cover and refrigerate for 12 to 18 hours.
  • Strain through a fine mesh sieve lined with a coffee filter, cheesecloth, or a nut milk bag.
  • Transfer the strained cold brew concentrate to a clean jar or bottle.
  • To serve, fill a glass with ice. Add 1/2 cup cold brew concentrate and 1/2 cup cold water, milk, or oat milk.
  • Sweeten to taste and stir before serving.

Notes

Use coarse coffee grounds for the smoothest cold brew. Fine grounds can make the drink cloudy, gritty, and bitter. Do not steep much longer than 18 hours, or the flavor may turn heavy. For a Starbucks-style version, serve with vanilla syrup, milk, and plenty of ice. Store strained cold brew concentrate in a covered jar in the fridge for up to 5 days.
